Bung Shui… Feng Shui: The pups always seem to be very particular
about where they poop! Sometimes they like to hide and sometimes they circle around until they
find that perfect spot. We figured maybe Feng Shui might have something to do with it. BOL!!!
Reality TV: The beagle pups spend A LOT of time sitting by the window sill,
spying on the activities just outside our house. We often think they've got front row seats
to their very own reality TV!.
Spam Mail: We always joke about the pups checking their 'pee-mail' on walks. Do
you think they also have to deal with 'spam mail' too?
Situation Critical?… or not: With the warmer weather we are keeping
more of our windows open. The other day we overheard everything the neighbors were saying as they
chatted just outside our window. At first we laughed at the conversation and then quickly realized how
easily the neighbors must overhear some of the weird and kooky things we say and do… especially when
we play with the pups!
Donations for the needy: Oh Hampton!!! If you are lucky to have a
beagle in your life, you know just as well as we do that beagles are always finding creative ways
to get extra noms!
Lub is in the air: We were in a silly mood when we thought up this comic. This
one is about Curly Poo and his new age philosophy matched up against Sunbeam's sarcasm. Who
do you side with?
Finding Hampton: We often catch Hampton looking to his big sisfur to know
how to react in different situations. For example, when we whisper the words "WALK" or "LETS GO"
in his ear, he looks to ZuZu to try to figure out how he supposed to react. Only when we say it loud
enough for ZuZu to hear, and she jumps off the couch squealing for joy, does he then know that is
what he's supposed to be doing too. BOL! Hampton never met Starbuck but we know he'd be following
his big beagle brofur around endlessly. Despite how much he tries, he always seems to default back
to his normal self… a living garburator!
Puppy Bum Stains: All puppy dog lovers have been there. How happy are
we when a cute puppy dog wants to sit on our laps? And how shocked are we when we realize
they've left a puppy love stain especially for you. ruh rohs!
Copy-Cat: Everyone loves a copy-cat... don't they? After all isn't imitation the best form
of flattery? This comic was inspired by two recent events. The first related to a neighbour who looked
like Grace from afar... and also ended up getting a beagle. We've never met but would often see them
walking from a distance. We found it quite funny as there have been a few cases of mistaken identity.
The second event relates to our comic. After submitting our ideas and receiving acknowledgements
from a celebrity website (whom shall remain nameless)... we found coincidentally a few weeks later that
same website taking on our ideas as their own (you know who you are!!!) Ok, there is still a little bitterness
left, just a teeny tiny bit... about the size of a curly poo but a copy of a curly poo - a baby poo! =)
Dog Poor: You've heard of being 'house poor' right? Well from expensive organic
meals and treats... to cute collars, beds and accessories... to the new brand name couch that
Hampton ripped up when we weren't looking (eek!!!... that was expensive!!!) we sometimes feel
like we're 'dog poor'. We admit sometimes it's not that bad. On a lucky day we find canned soup
with 25% more meatballs! BOL! Well I guess you can say we're truly jonesin for puppy love! :)
Shadowing: Have you ever found that your furry kid(s) likes to 'shadow' you around
the house wherever you might go (even to the bathroom to do a little *ahem" business?) Our bb's
take their job very seriously, but we're sure following us into the bathroom isn't their favourite part
of this responsibility...we think.
Instant Messaging: In real life we actually do sit across from each other
and instant message. Odd we know, but I'm sure we're not the only people out there who do this!
Sometimes it's just easier to share links and information this way. Hampton and ZuZu are usually
sitting under the table just like in this comic. From time to time one of them will paw at us for
attention and we always respond with a "WAIT". I'm sure if they got their paws on a laptop or our
iPhone they would be instant messaging us to get off our lazy butts and pay them some
attention! BOL!
Man Cave: Hampton is always snuggling under his blanket to sleep. However,
he is VERY particular about the type of blanket. He won't sleep under just any old blanket. It can't
be bed sheet or flannel... it must not have any creases or folds... it must be cotton of a certain weight...
and most important of all, Mummy's legs must accompany him to keep him warm. If none of these criteria
are met, he will make a big fuss until we comply to his standards. I've often compared all this to Hampton
having his own little 'man cave' much like what Daddy has. And so this comic is for all the Dads out there...
whether you're a Dad to a two-legged or four-legged baby. Happy Father's Day!
My very own garden salad: One spring morning we walked
out into the backyard to enjoy the sunshine when out from between our legs Hampton
made a beeline to the freshly bloomed flowers. In a matter of seconds he had eaten the
heads off the flowers and was making his way to the grass. He definitely does not have
the same appreciation for flowers like Starbuck did. We really believe Hampton thinks the
garden is his very own salad garden as he can often be found nomming on flowers right
before dinner. Good thing none of them are of the poisonous type!!!
What? It's Natural: Starbuck and ZuZu were the best of friends and
shared almost everything, including stinky farts when napping. In real life however, when
this would happen, Starbuck would jump up and run away. This comic depicts what we think
Starbuck really wanted to do instead. You see... he was quite the revengeful little beagle. He
once peed on our pillows when Daddy took ZuZu out for a walk without him.
Mummy's Day: I'm happy and proud to be a Mum to 4-legged babies. It's
always the small things that I appreciate and matter most to me as a Dog Mum: being able to
play ball (no matter how much it is lathered in slobber)... finding flowers that were especially
"picked" for me... and especially the snuggles! The best part of it all is that I get to experience
these small things every day and not just once a year. Happy Mummy's Day!!!
Puppy Poölogy by Curly Poo: We came up with this comic when
we were brainstorming a way to further develop cury poo's personality. In our thinking we started
to compare him with all the different types of doggy poo poos out there and voila... Puppy Poology
was born! LOL! Discussing the different types of doggy poo isn't everyone's favourite topic but we
hope this one made you laugh a little... we did.
The Needier the Meatier: There are some days we come home from a
long day at work and just want to relax... but unfortunately that isn't what the pups have in mind.
On days like those, we rely on nommy elk or bison bones (aka our "babysitter") to keep them busy.
Lately though it seems the pups have figured out exactly how to wind us up in order to score their
their nommy bones.
Train the Trainer: Almost every day we wonder who has trained whom!
It's true that Hampton has us waking up every morning at 5:30AM for breakfast... Starbuck
somehow always ended up being carried in our arms (FYI - he was a chubby heavy beagle)...
and ZuZu never seems to do anything wrong! In this comic we wanted to show how our
beagles, who always seem to act like they had us in the palm of their paws, were often times
duped by their own adopted sister in their own little schemes.
Where snow comes from: We had our last dump of snow last week.
The flakes were so big and fluffy it reminded us of when Starbuck used to go berserk on the toilet
paper roll. Now that he's up at Rainbow Bridge, we imagined that's where the big fluffy flakes were
coming from. Coincidently a few days later, Hampton got his paws on a roll and soon enough we had
'snow' inside the house.
Metrosexual Dog: A metrosexual is "a young, straight, sensitive urban
individual who is un-ashamed of improving his personal appearance and enjoying good clothes
and stylish living". When we first read the definition of this slang term, we automatically thought
"that's Starbuck!". Since he was a puppy, he was always posing for pics, wearing cute collars, jumping
into a bathtub and shower (he absolutely loved baths), tip-toeing around any areas he thought were
dirty and most important of all, he never lifted his leg for a pee! We have no idea where he learned
these habits from. Perhaps, as Lady Gaga would say, he was just "born this way". BOL!
Be my Valentine...or not? Hampton Monroe is always putting
on the charm in hopes of more noms... but no mater what the little rascal is up to, he will
always have Mummy's heart. Happy Valentine's Day everybody!
Oh Honey?: This comic is a true reflection of what goes on almost every night!!!
Grace thinks this is pretty comical. I totally disagree.
The Other Poo: When we first moved into our neighbourhood there was a
cute dog who lived down the block from us. We'd often see her in our lane way sniffing around
and walking about. One day while picking up ZuZu's poop by our garage we spotted another 'pile'
nearby. At first we thought we had accidently not picked up after one of our bb's and we questioned
if it could have been the neighbour dog who left the 'not so cute present' behind. Suddenly the other
poo became gross and disgusting and we decided we would never pick up after someone else's dog.
Subsequently, the 'other poo' remained untouched for the next four weeks until it got washed away
during a heavy rainfall.
Resolutions: This is just a cute comic that reflects what we think our puppies
would resolve to do better this coming year. Knowing these little monsters, they will very likely
succeed. Anyways...Happy New Years everyone!!!
Holiday Muffin Top: Grace (Mummy) really let loose this holiday
season, including letting loose on the top button of her pants too (I didn't say it...I'm just
typing this... :o). The bb's are also enjoying our holiday eating...as they are able to guilt,
sneak and enjoy a few extra noms from us.
Two for One???: This comic was simply inspired by Hampton's beagle
appetite. His favourite place in the house is the kitchen. He has reserved seating three
times a day as well as a Mummy's Restaurant frequent meal punch card.
Starbuck's Fall Oasis: It's November again and there has been
lots of rain and wind. We usually get some snowfall, but usually not until January or
February. Without the snow it's been dark and somewhat depressing. This time of year
reminds us of when Starbuck once found a flower blooming amongst all of the fallen
leaves. He loved flowers and seemed to always treat them like they were one of earth's
natural wonders.
Cheesy ears & Popcorn feet: This comic was inspired by
the true fact that Hampton literally has cheesy smelling ears and popcorn smelling feet.
We've heard from many other dog moms and dads that their pups smell the same way.
Mummy is also always heard saying how she can just eat Hampton up because he's just
so cute. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
What could have been: ZuZu is so obsessed with her own tennis
balls that whenever she sees one on the street, with another dog or in a store she just ignores
it like the plague. She is 'one' with t.b. and whines whenever she's not with him. In this comic
we tried to imagine what t.b. could have been had he not been destined to be covered in ZuZu's
bb (bad breath) 24x7.
It's a ruff puppy life: This comic is a simple illustration showing how
spoiled our pups are. From playing all day til the sun goes down... to countless hours of belly
rubs... to eating yummy pupcakes and cookies especially made for them by Mummy (Hell... she
doesn't even bake for me!!!)... to finally ending the day by napping with each other. What a ruff
life they lead! How do I get re-incarnated as a puppy?
Starbuck: Random Fact #1 True story! When I (Mummy) was young,
my sister and I decided to go for a swim. While we were splashing around in the water, we suddenly
saw a piece of poo float by. It was definitely not something we expected or wanted to see. And
something I hoped would never happen again. Oddly enough, many years later Starbuck found
himself in the same situation during one of his first experiences with swimming! If you don't
already know, Starbuck was a 'clean freak' (very un-beagle like). He always made every effort
to avoid anything that wasn't up to his clean standards. We often wondered if this experience
contributed to his dislike for swimming.
Inside Voice: Hampton Monroe's life revolves totally around a routine (just like his
Mummy). Like clockwork he barks three times a day to let us know it's time for him to eat (at 5AM
for breakfast, at 4:30PM for dinner and at 12AM for his late night snack). At first we thought he
was just being a little brat... but we soon caught on after noticing that he would bark at the same
time each day. The down side from all of this is that we get woken up everyday at 5AM. The
upside is that we no longer need an alarm clock.
The Assistant's Assistant's Assistant: Dave and I tend to do a
lot of things together around the house (eg: paying bills, planning for vacations, cooking, cleaning...etc).
When doing our 'tasks' we always fight for who will be the lead and who will be the assistant (neither of us
wanting to be the latter). This results in us deferring the less desirable tasks to the puppies (which would
'not suprisingly' never get done). If Starbuck and Hampton ever met, we could see them having the same
type of relationship. Starbuck was small for his breed and we think he developed a big ego because of it.
We're certain he would assign Hampton as his assistant. Hampton being the eager beaver would likely
oblige but would eventually defer his tasks to someone else. Although Hampton is not small in size
we think he definitely shares part of the same 'beagle ego'.
No No No No No !!! Hampton Monroe, the baby of our family, likes to get into all
sorts of mischief. We didn't realize how much we were saying the word "NO" until Grandma came over
and mentioned that he probably thought "No No No No No" was his name! Nevertheless, when he's up
to no good, he doesn't seem to respond to any of the names we throw his way.
Missing my furry babies: On our first vacation since Hampton Monroe joined
our family, Grace started to feel homesick for the BB's. At home, we have a strict routine centred around
the BB's meals, naps, playtime...etc. During our time away from them it was hard not to think of what we
would be doing if they were with us.
Starbuck's Toy Evaluation: We don't think there could be a pickier dog
than Starbuck. He was like the Donald Trump of toys (firing each one after getting bored with them).
None were ever worth his attention for more than a few minutes. Oddly enough, the simplest things
gave him countless hours of enjoyment (ie: plastic bottles and stinky socks).
Mummy farts: Mummy tends to have some pretty loud farts. Must be all of the peas
she eats. She conveniently blames it on ZuZu due to the fact that we once put her on a low carb diet
that seemed to produce some very interesting smells. With bb (bad breath) and smelly farts, ZuZu can't
seem to catch a break.
No room for Daddy: Mummy and the bb’s are known for hogging up the couch and
leaving Daddy to find his own spot (on an uncomfortable chair, in another room or sometimes even on the
floor). It's not that we don’t want him to be part of our snuggle session...there just isn’t enough room!
This is a true representation of what happens every night. The bb’s love him very much for giving up the
couch to them. Happy father’s day!
Mummy's little helper: Hampton Monroe is always trying to do 'nice' things
around the house for his Mummy like redecorating the house using toilet paper... helping her garden
by digging holes in the yard...and bringing in scents of nature (poop on his head) into the house. He's
only trying to be helpful... right?
Music to our ears: When Hampton Monroe joined our family we had forgotten
what it was like to raise a puppy beagle. Potty training at 3AM was definitely NOT our favourite part
of it. This comic reflects a true conversation we had on many early morning occasions. The whizzing
melody of Hampton finally peeing was truly music to our ears.
Are you my mummy?: We'd like to introduce you to our two new characters
Bungo and Curly Poo. They were both inspired by the amount of time we spend picking up the bbs' poo.
The size, color and shape of their poo always seem to enter the topic of conversation on our walks. Curly Poo
in particular is special to us. When Starbuck was sick we were always happy to see 'Curly Poo' show up as it
meant he was feeling better (vs. having the runs).
The Head Tilt: As you may know, Starbuck and Hampton have never met. We often
wonder what lessons Starbuck might have taught Ham, from one beagle to another. I'm sure the head
tilt would have been one of the first ones. Starbuck figured this one out early on and milked it whenever
he could. We finally caught on one day after we realized how much weight he had gained!!! Hopefully
Hampton Monroe doesn't have Starbuck's brain smarts.
Mummy and Daddy Love: A perfect Friday night for us has always
been staying at home, ordering take-out and cuddling up with our puppies (aka. bb's). When
we do finally force ourselves to go out, we usually can't wait to get back home!
Pushin it: When I (mummy) was in grade school, a classmate told me that sometimes
he would push to fart but ended up pooping instead. I always thought that was such an odd
but funny story. Years later while on a walk, Starbuck raised his leg for what I thought was a
pee...but ended up pooping instead! Old classmate, if you're reading this, you're not alone!
Tribute to Summer: After a while we started to notice that Starbuck became
very particular in where he would sprinkle his "puppy juice". He always went after the pretty
flowers. I'm sure he had the best of intentions. We notice that Hampton does the same thing.
Must be a beagle thing?
Recognition: All of you know how tough the dog park can be (competitive and
cliquey). We always felt like we were intruding at one of our local pubic parks. But of course
we kept on going back because Starbuck was the cutest pup you ever saw and ZuZu could
catch the ball like no other. :)
Happy Halloween: What do kiddies dress up as when they are young? It's
usually whatever it is they love or aspire to be. ZuZu loves balls so much that we figured she
would just want to turn herself into one!
Dumb Kibblet: Sometimes we just could not understand Starbuck. Even though
he would have a full bowl of kibble available to him, he would always whine and obsess over
the "one" kibblet that rolled under the couch. I guess he was one determined pup!
t.b. and b.b: As you may have guessed by now, ZuZu is completely and utterly
obsessed with tennis balls. This cartoon reflects her obsession. We also added what we
imagined to be the pain and suffering endured by poor t.b. By the way, the "b.b." that
always seems to hover around ZuZu's mouth stands for "bad breath".
ZuZu's Petals: This comic introduces ZuZu into Starbuck's life. She was a god
send as Starbuck was a little monster full of energy. ZuZu was named after the daughter of
George Bailey in the 1946 classic "It's a wonderful life". That's also where we got the phrase
"ZuZu's petals". However, in this case the petals reference the flowery gas ZuZu had when she
first came home to us. I think it was the new food we gave her. Sorry ZuZu!
Alpha Wannabee: Starbuck always had that macho bravado thing going on but
as soon as he saw a bug he would jump into Mummy's arms.
Feeling Special: When we first got Staruck we had him wear a ridiculously
large red bow. What made it worse was how tiny he was. We thought he looked cute and
caught him curiously looking at himself in the mirror more than a few times.
First Meeting: This was the first comic strip that kicked it all off for us back in 2003.
It's all true! It was our first visit to the the breeder that brought us our first puppy "Starbuck". He was
quite the little feisty one and was actually the only one that gave us any attention. He especially loved
Dave's (Daddy) shoe as he finally found the perfect place to mark his territory.
